Two Maguire Branches

There are two closely associated branches of the Maguires of Rossory/Cleneesh that are likely related.  In Canada the most documented person is Edward Allen Maguire (1852-1921).  The other side of the family are the descendants of Charles Maguire who all left Northern Ireland for Canada.

The first hint of the relation is from page 7 of the Maguire Tree, by Echo Maguire.  In this document she details “the first cousins that came to Canada” as as “Edie Maguire – was a superintendent at the mental hospital in Toronto; he had five children…. Dorothy… Ed H… Helen… David… Eddie… Annie [and] Flossie.”  As well Roy Maguire Nel Maguire and Queen Maguire”

The beginning of the documentary evidence in Canada comes from the Marriage of Samuel Maguire (a son of Charles) to Mary Montgomery where Edward Maguire (1852-1921) was a witness.

Edward’s Parents were William and Ann; this William (1798 – 1874) would be of the same Generation as the Charles mentioned above. I have come to know that William is the son of William and Elizabeth Anne.  So, the question is: is Charles also the son of William and Elizabeth?

If so, from what we know of the Family of William and Elizabeth, Charles would have been the 5th child.  Children would have been born between about 1782 and 1803 and Elizabeth would have been about 40 years of age when Charles was born. These children seem to have arrived in ‘batches’ the first three between 1782 and 1789; and assuming my assumprions are correct between 1798 and 1803.  The relations between William and Charles, by virtue of age, would be stronger and in a surviving letter from Charles the cousins in Ireland are mentioned and refer specifically to the children of William, his putative brother.

Now, all that remains is finding some record of who Charles’ parents were.
